We are keen to hear from committed, enthusiastic and dynamic Emergency Medicine Registrars looking for new opportunities commencing January 2024 through to January 2025.

Mō Tātou – About Us

Tauranga Hospital is a Level 5 hospital with acute services including general medicine and medical sub-specialities, cardiology, intensive care, paediatrics, O&G, mental health, orthopaedics, general and vascular surgery, urology, ENT and ophthalmology within Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, Waikato Hospital is our adult tertiary referral service, Starship for our paediatric tertiary services.

The Emergency Department is a dynamic and evolving service which has undergone considerable staff expansion recently. We are staffed by 15 SMOs (14 FACEMs) offering 17 hours per day direct shop floor supervision. We are a busy department seeing 50,000 patients per year, 20% of which are paediatric patients. We see a broad case-mix with a 35% admission rate reflecting the acuity of presentations trainees will be exposed to.

We are accredited for 24 months core ED ACEM training time. We would welcome ACEM trainees, wishing to complete their regional/rural time or simply looking to broaden their experience outside of a major centre.

We are passionate about medical education and offer protected teaching for four hours a week, including an active simulation programme. We concurrently have teaching support for both Primary and Fellowship examinations and candidates regularly sitting both of these.

There is a clinical governance framework in place and research opportunities will be available for interested and enthusiastic trainees.

Tauranga is a great place to live and work – a vibrant and expanding city with both coastal and rural attractions right on our doorstep. We wind down after work with surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, mountain biking and much more. We have a great café scene and wineries nearby too.

We are a close-knit team who enjoy the challenging environment of Emergency Medicine. We feel fortunate to live and work in such a great place and look forward to sharing this with our successful applicants.
