    Job Description: Booker T. Washington Academy-Summer Academic Assistants

    Dates of Employment: June 27 - July 28, 2023
    Summer Enrichment Program Schedule: July 3 - July 28, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    Academic Program: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
    Enrichment Activities: Monday-Thursday, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    Enrichment/Field Trips: Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.


    Daily Rate: $25 per hour

    SUMMARY
    The responsibility of the teaching - assistants is to work closely with the teacher to support in the smooth and effective running of the class. The Academic Assistant reports to the Summer School Director.

    GUIDING PRINCIPLES
    • Supports and advances the Mission, Vision and Philosophy of the School.
    • Supports student learning and achievement through cooperative effort and best practices.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assist the teacher with regular lessons and activities using different collaborative models
    • Supervise or lead small group activities
    • Assist individual students as needed (ELL support, IEP recommendations, ...)
    • Administering basic first aid or bringing children to the nurse’s office for medical attention
    • Supervise the class when teacher is not in the room
    • Check student work that is assigned by the teacher
    • Prepare various teaching aids (e.g. organize centers, posters, educational games, etc.)
    • Assist in the maintenance of the classroom organization (e.g. tidying, filing, etc.)
    • Prepare and present displays of students' work
    • Provide direct instruction to individual students or small groups based on guidance from the teacher
    Professional Expectations:
    • Support the objectives of the school (e.g. implementing natural consequences, encouraging appropriate risk - taking, using positive reinforcement, etc.)
    • Use behavior management strategies in line with the school’s policy and procedures which contribute to a purposeful learning environment
    • Respect students’ social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic backgrounds
    • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students
    • Dress appropriately, as per school dress code
    • Is punctual
    • Attend team and staff meetings as required
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a professional team
    • Communicate effectively with sensitivity
    • Build and maintain successful relationships with students, treating them consistently, with respect and consideration and to be concerned for their development as learners
    • Provide constructive feedback to the student and teacher (both verbal and written)
    • Maintain confidentiality
    • Continually seek to improve own practice, including through observation, examination and discussion with colleagues
    • Be proactive and take initiative
    • Seek advice or guidance as necessary
    Knowledge and Requirements
    At least 60 hours of college credit or and Associates Degree Long term goal of becoming a classroom teacher
