How You’ll Make an Impact

KCRW is committed to serving and representing all communities of Southern California. KCRW’s Report LA Fellowship aims to diversify future public media newsrooms by training and funding for 18 months two budding journalists from historically underrepresented groups.

We hope to find enthusiastic applicants of all backgrounds who stay up on the news, demonstrate knowledge of Southern California, have journalism experience (college media accepted), and are pursuing a career in media.

Fellows will contribute to KCRW’s news coverage from day one. Fellows will receive hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism, including news and culture show production, audio field recording, reporting news stories, and digital writing. Fellows will have access to the vast cultural resources of Southern California and the opportunity to develop their capacity and grow their passions.

This is a full-time, fixed-term, non-exempt position reporting to Managing Editor, News. This 18-month Fellowship will begin September 5, 2023. The application deadline is July 30, 2023.

Hybrid work schedule is expected with regular in–person work at our Santa Monica studios.

KCRW has in effect a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all employees beginning September 15, 2021. The mandate is subject to accommodation in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

What You’ll Do

  • Pitch interview ideas, conduct research, book guests, and write scripts.
  • Learn audio editing and ProTools.
  • Pitch, write, report, produce, and edit stories for radio and digital platforms.
  • Work with producers of original content programs that cover film, books, food, design, news, and music.
  • Work in the diverse communities of Southern California, finding sources and stories and introducing new audiences to public media.

What You’ll Need

  • A cover letter introducing yourself and what you find exciting about being a journalist in Southern California
  • Samples of your journalistic work
  • 2+ years of journalism experience (including student publications, internships and fellowships)
  • Fluency in digital journalism and social media platforms
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • High-quality writing skills
  • A college degree or equivalent work experience
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
